The Rise of Semaglutide – the Weight Loss Miracle Drug

As part of our cultural mandate, The Arts Club is committed to exploring and interrogating the most current topical issues, bringing together experts in their fields for a series of engaging and intimate conversations.

Semaglutide, originally used as a medicine for diabetic patients, has become a global phenomenon for fast weight loss with its use by many public figures widely documented in the press. With its new popularity, comes the reverse effect: diabetic patients suffering from a shortage of the drug, a rise in black market sales and severe health implications, many of which are still being discovered.

The rise of Semaglutide also poses the question of how the West deals with its obesity crisis, and if an increased reliance on medication, as opposed to nutrition and fitness education campaigns in a sustainable solution.

We are pleased to be joined by Dr Oksana Pyzik, lecturer at UCL’s School of Pharmacy alongside Dr Stephanie Baldewag, Honorary Professor in UCL’s Department of Medicine, David Aaronovitch, presenter of BBC Radio 4’s Briefing Room and Times columnist, and, finally, moderator and award-winning international journalist, Hadley Gamble, to discuss the important subject which is Semaglutide.
