Join us for a timely new exhibition, aptly named ‘New Myth: Contemporary Artists of Native American & First Nations Descent,’ that focuses on American and Canadian artists whose vibrant, raw, and poetic works traverse their cultural roots and their lives today.
For too long the commodification of traditional Native art seemingly, falsely, suspended their artistic practices somewhere in the past, obscuring more recent histories and ever-evolving visual languages. The artists featured here – including Julie Buffalohead, Jaune Quick-to-See Smith, Gisela McDaniel and Cannupa Hanska Luger – balance personal and familial histories with contemporary artistic, societal, and political concerns, forging practices that address our constantly shifting present.
On view in the Drawing and Ante Rooms, New Myth: Contemporary Artists of Native American & First Nations Descent offers insight into a significant Contemporary Art movement that is gaining considerable recognition across museums, biennales, and major galleries today.
